sonROAD18: Noise register

Road noise affects a third of the Swiss population. To deal with this problem, the cantons are required to draw up a road noise register. With itsROAD18, a precise model that complies with the legislation, they have a modern tool for mapping nuisances, prioritising remediation and informing the public.

What is a noise register?

A road noise register is a thematic map showing noise emissions and immissions due to traffic. It serves as a basis for planning protection measures, analysing development projects and managing building permits. It is accessible to the public and also contributes to transparency and awareness-raising.

The sonROAD18 model in brief

Developed by Empa on behalf of the FOEN, sonROAD18 is a noise emission model based on actual Swiss traffic conditions. It incorporates more than ten vehicle categories (SWISS10+), speeds, gradients, pavement type and temperature, and allows more detailed modelling of emissions, including at low speeds or in the event of congestion.

Practical application: Neuchâtel as an example

In 2021, the canton of Neuchâtel updated its cadastre using the sonROAD18 model and SLIP software. This update involved meticulous processing of more than 2,300 road sections, integrating traffic data, speeds, road geometry and surfaces. Bridges, tunnels, noise barriers and buildings were accurately modelled in 3D, taking into account their effect on sound propagation.
Calculations were made for every building in which people live, using more than 34,000 immission points across the country. Two versions of the model were even calculated: with and without noise barriers, to measure their real effectiveness. This in-depth work now enables the canton to target its interventions effectively, while meeting its legal obligations.

An essential tool for the cantons

The sonROAD18 cadastre is more than just a diagnosis. It enables the cantons to prioritise remediation, anticipate the effects of new infrastructure, manage urban development in sensitive areas and ensure transparency vis-à-vis the public. It is fully in line with a proactive environmental policy.

The role of G+P in the process

With its experience and specialised tools such as SLIP, Grolimund + Partenaires SA supports the cantons at every stage: data processing, modelling, emission and immission calculations and final validation. Our rigorous approach guarantees reliable results that comply with federal standards and are adapted to local conditions.

Final summary

The sonROAD18 cadastre is much more than a model: it's a practical tool for improving quality of life. Thanks to its application on the ground - as in Neuchâtel - it enables precise action to be taken. G+P supports the cantons in this essential process.

Many municipalities lack reliable data on the condition of their road networks. The municipality of Glarus is changing that. Since March 2025, it has been using vialytics – a system that automatically assesses road conditions using a smartphone camera and artificial intelligence. As the exclusive Swiss partner of vialytics, Grolimund + Partner AG supported the municipality in implementing the technology and laid the foundation for modern, data-driven road management.

SonRAIL and SLIP: When Technology Creates Calm

Noise is one of the most significant burdens in the vicinity of railway lines. For local residents, it means restless nights and a reduced quality of life. For project managers, noise is a sensitive factor that influences the acceptance of a project and helps determine how smoothly approval procedures run. Anyone planning railway infrastructure today must not only measure noise, but understand it, assess it proactively and reduce it effectively. This is exactly where G+P comes in.
